If the death is expected and after a person has died, the GP will be contacted to certify the death (a locum or London Ambulance Service can do this). Only the GP may issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) for the attention of the Medical Examiners Office. Once this has been completed, a funeral director can be instructed to help guide the family through the next stages (body collection into their care).
A Medical Examiner’s Officer will then contact the family to explain the certificate and confirm when the death can be registered. When advised, the family use the links below, select the borough in which the death occurred, and follow the link to book an appointment with the local register office. This must be done in the borough where the person died.
Registration must be completed in person, and this step allows funeral arrangements to move forward.
