At Green Ending Funerals, we’re always looking for innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint—without compromising on dignity or tradition. One simple, powerful way to reduce the environmental impact of a cremation is by choosing a cardboard coffin.
That’s why we’re proud to introduce our Cocoon Coffin: a unique, eco-conscious solution that offers the look and feel of a wooden casket, with the lower environmental impact of a cardboard interior.
Traditional coffins—often made from solid wood or MDF with varnishes and metal fittings—can release between 150–250 kg of CO₂ during cremation. In contrast, cardboard coffins are made from recycled paper materials, with no varnish, no metal, and a much lighter build. The result? A significantly lower carbon output—around 50–100 kg of CO₂ per cremation.

The Benefits of a Cocoon Coffin
The Cocoon is a beautifully crafted wooden shell designed to hold an eco-friendly cardboard coffin inside. This thoughtful design allows families to honour their loved one with the elegance of wood while significantly reducing carbon emissions during cremation.
The cocoon can be treated like any other wooden coffin or casket and can be carried by bearers, or if desired, placed on the catafalque before the service. At the end of the service, the cardboard coffin is carefully removed from the Cocoon and taken for cremation.
